Chrome to mark older Symantec SSL certificates as “Not Secure”

October 10, 2018

Many SSL secured sites will be marked “Not Secure” in the next planned update for Google Chrome, when the browser will drop trust for a major SSL certificate provider following a series of security incidents.

Chrome is planning their 70th update to be released on or around October 16, bringing with it bad news for anyone making use of older Symantec certificates issued before June 2016, including legacy branded Thawte, VeriSign, Equifax, GeoTrust and RapidSSL certificates. This is due to to a series of questionable website authentication certificates issued by Symantec Corporation, which makes it impossible to authenticate which certificates are secure.

SSL certificates encrypt the data between your computer and the website you’re browsing, making it near-impossible for anyone to intercept your data. This provides your clients with the peace of mind that your site has not been tampered with and that sensitive information is not leaked to those with malicious intent.

We’ve covered why SSL is important before on this blog, but those who already have SSL from a third party may be at risk of having their site’s certificate ignored by Chrome users.

Luckily for Mshini users, we offer free Let’s Encrypt SSL certificates that are trusted by all major browsers.
